Langtang is a narrow
valley bordering to Tibet but still far away from Tibetan Plateau. A
trek to the Langtang valley is a great opportunity to explore
villages, climb small peaks, and to visit glaciers at comfortably
low elevations. People living here look like Tibetans. A great
influence of Tibet can be experienced in this valley. Tamang tribe
is the main settler in this region. Trekkers pass through two
different national parks while trekking in this region.
Gosainkunda Lake also known as the Frozen Laken lies 4,380 metres
above sea level in the Langtang National Park of Nepal. It is
believed the lake was formed by lord Shiva; after taking poison from
Samudramanthan he desperately needed cold water to quench the heat
of the poison so he used his Trishul (holy three-pointed sword) to
dig up the land to try and obtain water. The lake is sacred to both
Hindu and Buddhists.
The trek brings you to the Langtang Valley and takes you through
varied landscapes and villages inhabited by Tamangs whose religious
practices and dress are much the same as their cousins in Tibet. .
Rara
Lake lies in the remote Karnali region, North West of Kathmandu and
the area surrounding the lake was declared a National Park in 1976.
Rara Lake has the distinction of being the largest lake in Nepal.
The lake is the obvious focal point of the park where some well
preserved forest and abundance of wildlife are found in the
protected area.
